METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 9, 1997, a truck driver with one month of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry. The employee had climbed into the material storage bin to collect a sample coming off the bin feeder conveyor belt. The discharge conveyor belt under the storage bin was running and caused the material within the bin to slide and engulf him. The victim died from suffocation. This is the 20th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 11 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 11th fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were six powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
