METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 2, 1997, a foreman with 2 years of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. There were no witnesses to the accident. The victim was found wedged between a conveyor and the return idler underneath the belt. He died from crushing injuries. This is the 29th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 16 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 13th fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were six powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
