METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On July 24, 1997, a contractor mechanic, with unknown mining experience, was fatally injured at an open pit mine. Two other employees received non-critical injuries . The three employees were replacing brake shoes on a railroad engine which had been hoisted by a crane and blocked with 4x4- inch wooden blocks. The engine rocked and fell off the block, landing on the mechanic. This is the 40th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 31 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 7th fatality classified as machinery in 1997. There were 2 fatalities classified as machinery during the same period in 1996.
