METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 30, 1997, a scraper operator with 2 years of mining experience was killed at an open pit mine. The scraper overtravelled the side of a 5-foot high stockpile and rolled over. This is the 54th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 38 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 21st fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were 12 powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
