METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 20, 1997, a leadman with 24 years of mining experience was killed at a granite quarry and mill. The victim was cleaning the weigh scale in front of a 125-ton locomotive and ten cars that were not blocked against movement, nor had any brakes set. When four cars were attached to the rear of the parked train, it moved forward and the engine ran over him. This is the 56th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 41 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 22nd fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were 14 powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
