METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 15, 1999, a 59-year-old technician (contractor operator) with 28 years experience was fatally injured at an open pit copper mine. The victim was driving a pickup service truck when he was run over by a 320-ton haulage truck.

Best Practices

  • Haulage trucks with restricted visibility should be equipped with devices which eliminate blind areas.

  • Mobile equipment operators should be able to communicate with haulage trucks when they share the same roadways.
  • This is the seventh fatality reported in calendar year 1999 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1998, there were eight fatalities reported in these industries. This is the third fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 1999. There were two Powered Haulage fatalities in the same period in 1998.
