METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 30, 2000, a 47-year-old driller with 7 years mining experience was fatally injured at an underground mine. The victim was operating a twin boom jumbo drill when his clothing became entangled on the rotating drill steel coupling sheer pin.

    This is the 35th fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. (On 8/8/2000, the Fatality Review Committee determined that fatal no. 8 on 2/21/2000 was not chargeable). As of this date in 1999, there were 34 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the tenth fatality classified as Machinery in 2000. There were six Machinery fatalities in the same period in 1999.
