Mining methods should be established that ensure wall, bank, and slope stability in places where persons work or travel.
Appropriate supervisors or other designated persons should examine and, where applicable, test ground conditions in areas where work is to be performed prior to work commencing.
Ground conditions which create hazards to persons should be taken down or supported before work or travel is permitted in the affected area.
This is the ninth fatality reported in calendar year 2001 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 2000, there were nine fatalities reported in these industries. This is the first fatality classified as Machinery in 2001. There were two Machinery fatalities in the same period in 2000.
