COAL MINE FATALITY - On Wednesday, June 1, 2005, a 42-year old electrician with 3 years mining experience was fatally injured while attempting to remove a piece of canvas that was wrapped around the section feeder rotary pick breaker. The victim was working in the feeder when the rotary breaker started.

Establish and use Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures. Ensure that power is off and cannot be accidentally restored to machinery before any work is performed on such equipment. Ensure that machinery is blocked against motion before performing maintenance or repairs. Always identify safety hazards before beginning any work task, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Always position yourself in the safest possible position.
This is the sixth fatality reported during calendar year 2005 in the coal mining industry. As of this date in 2004, there were 11 fatalities reported in coal mining. This is the fourth fatality classified as powered haulage in 2005. There were four fatalities in this category at this time in 2004.
