METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 25, 2007, a 65 year-old truck driver, with 42 years mining experience, was fatally injured at a cement operation. The victim was operating a haul truck that veered off the roadway, climbed a berm, and fell over a highwall onto a bench below. The victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the cab of the truck.
Always wear your seatbelt. Monitor employees regularly to ensure seat belts are worn when operating mobile equipment. Ensure that pre-operational checks are conducted to identify and correct any defects that may affect the safe operation of self propelled mobile equipment.

This is the 10th fatality reported in calendar year 2007 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 2006, there were 8 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 2nd Powered Haulage fatality in 2007. There were 3 Powered Haulage fatalities in the same period in 2006.
