Mine Emergency Requirements
If there is an emergency at your mining operation-a fire, an explosion, or water inundation-do you know what Federal law requires you to do?

Hello, I'm Bob Friend with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Each underground mine operator must designate a specific person for each shift miners are working underground to be the responsible official to take charge if there is an emergency.

This person must have thorough knowledge of the mine. He or she will make important decisions on how to evacuate the mine during a fire, explosion or inundation.

Federal law also says operators must contact the Mine Safety and Health Administration within 15 minutes of any serious accident. You must call us at 1-800-746-1553.

In addition, mine operators must have a program of instruction and training for firefighting and evacuation of the mine so that miners are prepared for these emergencies.

The bottom line is - know the law. Be prepared.

    Thank you for listening.
