Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao to Honor Department's Quecreek Coal Mine Rescuers
Quecreek Miners Will Join Secretary in Celebration

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a ceremony at the Department of Labor on Wednesday, September 4, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao will recognize employees of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) who took part in the rescue of nine coal miners who emerged safely after 77 hours in the flooded Quecreek Mine. Some 70 MSHA employees contributed to the rescue effort either on-site at the mine near Somerset, Pa., or behind the scenes. Six of the Quecreek miners will participate in the ceremony. In addition, the MSHA rescue capsule that brought the miners up from the flooded mine will be on exhibit.

EVENT: U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and Quecreek miners will honor Labor Department employees who assisted in rescue of miners trapped in flooded Pennsylvania coal mine.
Media are invited to attend but there will be no media availability or interviews.
