U.S. mine safety agency seeking more mine inspectors in Pennsylvania
Coal mine inspector positions available in Pottsville, Shamokin and Wilkes-Barre

ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is continuing its efforts to hire new coal mine inspectors by conducting applicant screenings June 15 and 16 at the Indiana County Technology Center, 441 Hamill Road, Indiana, Pa., for positions available in Pottsville, Shamokin and Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Interested persons who have not previously registered via MSHA's Web site are welcome to attend, subject to space availability. These screenings are intended to recruit candidates for surface, underground and electrical positions only. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. EDT and testing will begin at 8.

"We're looking for qualified people dedicated to MSHA's mission, and those who want to end accidental injuries and fatalities in our nation's mines," said Richard E. Stickler, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "This agency needs motivated professionals eager to help us continue to protect the mining industry's number one resource - our nation's miners."

MSHA is the federal agency charged with inspection of mining operations nationwide for adherence to regulations designed to protect the safety and health of working miners.

Everyone attending the screenings should bring a completed resume and photo identification. Check the agency's Web site at to confirm the status of the screenings before traveling to the screening site. Individuals claiming Veterans Preference must also provide supporting documentation.

All applicants will be notified of test results. Selected candidates will participate in a formal two-year training program, should be able to perform arduous duties and can expect a starting annual salary of about $43,000. In addition to a 40-hour workweek with generous annual, sick and holiday leave, selected candidates are offered health, life and long-term care insurance; a stable retirement program, including a tax-deferred savings plan; travel reimbursement; and flexible spending accounts for medical and dental expenses.
