2010 Metal/Nonmetal National  Mine Rescue Contest


The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is pleased to announce the 2010 Metal and Nonmetal National Mine Rescue Contest (National Contest) will be held on July 27 - 29 in Reno, Nevada. We would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to participate.

The contest will be comprised of four events: (1) Mine Rescue; (2) Technician Team; (3) First Aid; and (4) Team trainer test. Each event will include a written examination. As in the past, the Silver Legacy Resort will serve as the host hotel and the competition will take place at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The deadline for registering is June 15.

Mine rescue teams in the United States provide the best trained and best equipped rescue capability in the world. I hope that your company will continue to show their support for mine rescue by participating in this year's national competition.


Pre-Registration: The registration fee for participation in the Metal and Nonmetal 2010 National Mine Rescue Contest is $750.00 per team which includes ten (10) Awards Banquet tickets at no additional cost. To register, please complete the enclosed Team Entry Form and return, along with payment, to the address listed below by June 15. Payment must be made in the form of a check or money order and made payable to the Silver Legacy Resort (Silver Legacy). If you wish to have your team picture in the 2010 National Mine Rescue Contest Program, you must provide a color digital photo along with entry forms or e-mail to Early entry is encouraged to ensure accurate planning and smooth coordination for the competition.

Team Registration: Team registration will be held at the Silver Legacy on Monday, July 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

HOST HOTEL Reservations: Room reservations are the responsibility of each individual team. For the convenience of our participants, a block of rooms have been set aside at the Silver Legacy for a special rate of $85 a night plus tax. If you wish to reserve rooms, please call their reservation line at 1-800-687-8733 and refer to code: MSHA10 to take advantage of the special rate. The cut-off date for room reservations at the reduced rate is June 15.


The Awards Banquet is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Silver Legacy. Your team participation fee entitles you up to ten (10) Awards Banquet tickets at no additional cost. However, if you need additional tickets; the cost per ticket will be $40 which includes tax and gratuity. In order to receive banquet tickets, complete the enclosed Awards Banquet Ticket Order Form and return, along with payment, to the following address by June 15. Payment must be made in the form of a check or money order and made payable to the Silver Legacy Resort. The banquet will be arranged for open seating so if necessary, additional tickets should be purchased before June 15 as only a limited number of tickets will be available after this date. Written tests will be given to all participants prior to the preliminary field competition on Tuesday, July 27 at the Reno Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority. The preliminary field competition will be conducted on Tuesday (day 1) and Wednesday (day 2), July 27 and 28. The final competition will be conducted on Thursday, July 29 and will consist of the top seven teams from day 1 and day 2. Teams not working the field problem may compete in the technician team and first aid competitions. However, a team member may not participate in more than one of these events and each team will only be permitted to compete in each event once.


Equipment can be shipped to The Freeman Companies and held for delivery to the Reno Sparks Convention Center. Each individual company is responsible for contacting them directly at (775) 355-4600 or fax (775) 358-0570 to arrange their own shipment and to coordinate delivery. Their warehouse shipping address is: Please note that each package/box must be labeled clearly with the Individual Company Name and must state: (1) For Mine Rescue Contest 2010 and (2) To be delivered to Reno/Sparks Convention Center - 7/26/2010.

Equipment will be accepted at the Convention Center on Monday July 26 from 09:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Access to the holding room at the Convention Center is from Kietzke Road through roll up door 15 on the east side.

Electrical outlets will be available for teams to plug in their ice freezers at the Convention Center. BG-4 teams should bring plastic forms (4 inches in height) that enable them to make ice blocks for their apparatus.

There will not be any washing/drying facilities available at the Convention Center to clean face pieces after competing. It is recommended that you bring towels and wipe down materials if necessary.


Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR), Part 49.7 requires each member of a mine rescue team to be examined annually by a physician who shall certify that each person is physically fit to perform mine rescue and recovery work for prolonged periods under strenuous conditions.

The designated official in charge of your team must be present during registration to sign and verify that all participating team members have received the required physical examination within 1 year of the contest date and are physically fit, trained and qualified under 30 CFR, Part 49.7 to compete.
