The Mine Safety and Health Administration is pleased to announce that the 2002 Metal and Nonmetal National and International Mine Rescue Contest will be held August 20, 21 and 22, 2002, at the Sparks/Reno Convention Authority in Reno, Nevada. International mine rescue teams have also been invited to participate in this year's event, and we anticipate teams and delegations from several countries to compete or observe the competition.

Because of its importance to the entire mining community, I sincerely hope you will be able to participate in this year's Contest. We have made considerable changes this year which we believe will provide a first rate program and a rewarding experience for all who attend. The new format will allow teams an opportunity to observe other National and International teams compete, and to support the finalists. Team registration will be held at the Reno Hilton Hotel, lower level, on Monday, August 19, 2002, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A tentative schedule of events is enclosed. A full schedule of events will be provided at registration.

The Contest will be held at the Reno/Sparks Convention Authority and will be comprised of four events: field competition consisting of a 2-day preliminary and a 1-day final competition, an apparatus bench contest, a multi-gas instrument contest, and a first aid contest. Each event will include a written examination.

All written tests will be given to all participants on Tuesday, August 20. Preliminary National field competitions will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20 and 21, with the final competition on Thursday, August 22. Teams not working the field problem will compete in the bench, gas and first aid competitions on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20 and 21. The field competition for International teams will be conducted concurrent to the National preliminary field competitions on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20 and 21.

If you wish to enter a team in the Competition, please use the enclosed Team Entry Form, which is also available on our web site at You may reproduce the form if you want to enter more than one team. There is a $300 entry fee charged per team to compete. This entry fee is to accompany your entry form. Your team entry form, along with a check for the entry fee made payable to Patricia Hines, must be received by July 20 in order to insure your team's inclusion in the official program. An addressed return envelope is provided for your convenience. Information concerning the shipping and storage of equipment will be sent to you at a later date. This information will also be posted on MSHA's web site.

The awards banquet will be held on Thursday, August 22, in the Reno Hilton Hotel Pavilion from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The banquet will have open seating. Checks for banquet tickets must be received prior to July 30. There will only be a limited number of tickets available after that date. Please make your check payable to Patricia Hines, and mail to Patricia Hines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, Post Office Box 5824, Arlington, Virginia 22205. Due to the relocation of the MSHA Headquarters Office prior to the Contest, and in order to avoid the misdirection of your team entry form or banquet ticket form, it is imperative that you use this post office address for the Contest and not the MSHA address you already have on record.

The Reno Hilton Hotel, 2500 East Second Street., Reno, NV 89595 will be the Contest Headquarters. A block of rooms has been set aside at the Hilton for this Competition. If you wish to stay at the Hilton, their reservations department can be reached at 800-648-5080.
