Lee began his mining career at Carey Salt in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1962. He entered mine rescue in 1965 and held the positions of team captain and then trainer until he retired in 1988. After retiring from Carey, Lee accepted employment at Hutchinson Community College where he worked as a State Grants Coordinator until his recent retirement from that position.
