High-Pressure Hose Connections

30 CFR 56.13021, 57.13021, 75.1730(e), and 77.412(d)

30 CFR §56/57.13021 High-pressure hose connections.

Except where automatic shutoff valves are used, safety chains or other suitable locking devices shall be used at connections to machines of high-pressure hose lines of ¾-inch inside diameter or larger, and between high-pressure hose lines of ¾-inch inside diameter or larger, where a connection failure would create a hazard.

MSHA policy can be found here: 56/57.13021

30 CFR §75.1730 Compressed air; general; compressed air systems.

(e) Safety chains, suitable locking devices, or automatic cut-off valves shall be used at connections to machines of high-pressure hose lines of three-fourths of an inch inside diameter or larger, and between high-pressure hose lines of three-fourths of an inch inside diameter or larger, where a connection failure would create a hazard.  For purposes of this paragraph, high-pressure means pressure of 100 p.s.i. or more.

There is no MSHA Policy for this standard.

These standards require that safety chains or other suitable locking devices be used at and between connections to machines of ¾-inch inside diameter or larger high-pressure hose lines.

30 CFR §77.412 Compressed air systems

(a) Compressors and compressed-air receivers shall be equipped with automatic pressure-relief valves, pressure gages, and drain valves.

(b) Repairs involving the pressure system of compressors, receivers, or compressed-air-powered equipment shall not be attempted until the pressure has been relieved from that part of the system to be repaired.

(c) At no time shall compressed air be directed toward a person. When compressed air is used, all necessary precautions shall be taken to protect persons from injury.

(d) Safety chains or suitable locking devices shall be used at connections to machines of high-pressure hose lines of 1-inch inside diameter or larger, and between high-pressure hose lines of 1-inch inside diameter or larger, where a connection failure would create a hazard.

There is no MSHA Policy for this standard.

This standard requires that safety chains or other suitable locking devices be used at and between connections to machines of 1-inch inside diameter or larger high-pressure hose lines.

Issues to Consider in Determining Compliance:

Is high-pressure air being supplied to hose lines of ¾-inch inside diameter or larger?

Are automatic shutoff valves used at connections to or between connections of hose(s) to a machine?

Are safety chains or other suitable locking devices used where hose lines of ¾-inch inside diameter or larger are connected to or between connections to a machine?

»      Could a connection failure create a hazard to persons in the area?
