Applied Engineering Division
The Applied Engineering Division is responsible for assisting Coal Mine Safety and Health (Coal) and Metal and Nonmetal Mine Safety and Health (Metal) in carrying out the mandates of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 related to accidents and fatalities in the mining industry. Such accidents involve safety and engineering controls related to large surface and underground equipment operations and mechanisms, environmental conditions and hazards, roof control, ventilation, explosives, etc. The function and mission of the Applied Engineering Division is to participate in accident investigations to determine the cause of accidents, develop and provide short-term engineering controls and solutions to reduce accidents, conduct analyses and evaluations of accident and injury data to identify solutions to effect downward trends in accidents and injuries, interface with a variety of entities to implement solutions to identified engineering and related issues, develop presentations that demonstrate modified processes or controls to eliminate the exposure or condition that contributed to accidents, develop, maintain and distribute a variety of audio, video and text materials to the mining community to educate and train workers in safety and health practices, and consult with the mining industry and other interested parties to promote mine safety and health training within the mining industry.
