A Near Miss

On Friday, December 9, 2005, at about 10:48 a. m., a contractor sustained compressed vertebras and bruising when he fell 11 feet into a rotary breaker. The victim was located on top of the breaker cutting it with a torch. After cutting a section of metal from the top, the victim fell into the breaker landing on the pile of cut material.

Best Practices
  • Always use fall protection equipment, safety belts and lines, when working near elevated openings where there is a danger of falling.
  • Keep work areas clear of all extraneous materials and other stumbling hazards.
  • Workplace examinations should be made by competent persons to identify hazards associated with the operation.
