A Near Miss

On Monday, December 10, 2001, a foreman was seriously injured when the cone of a refuse bin, loaded with approximately 200 tons of material, collapsed destroying the adjoining support structures. The foreman and an electrician were on the catwalk nearby preparing to wash out the conveyor belt tailpiece when the failure occurred. The electrician heard a sound coming from above and escaped out the conveyor catwalk. The foreman came off the platform, fell approximately 15 feet to the ground below, and then rolled over a nearby embankment sustaining head and shoulder injuries. There were four employees in the area at the time of the collapse.
