Joe's mining career as an electrician and maintenance supervisor/engineer started in 1975 at Kaiser Steel's York Canyon Coal Mine near Raton, New Mexico. His mine rescue career began in 1991 when he joined the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) team for which he has served as benchman and fresh air base attendant. Joe has participated in 65 bench competitions, 46 of which he has won or placed second. In National Benchman competition, Joe has won twice and garnered three second place finishes. He responded to four mine emergencies with the WIPP team and helped conduct three Mexico National Mine Rescue events. |
