Focuses on 2 safety standards – 1 in coal mining and 1 in metal and nonmetal mining – cited as a result of at least five mining accidents and resulting in at least five fatalities during the 10-year period from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2015.

Coal Priority Standard

30 CFR § 77.207 – Illumination – “Illumination sufficient to provide safe working conditions shall be provided in and on all surface structures, path, walkways, stairways, switch panels, loading and dumping sites, and working areas.”

During the review period, violations of 30 CFR § 77.207 contributed to 6 fatalities.

Metal and Nonmetal Priority Standard

30 CFR § 57.3201 – Location for Performing Scaling – “Scaling shall be performed from a location which will not expose persons to injury from falling materials, or other protection from falling materials shall be provided.” 

During the review period, violations of 30 CFR § 57.3201 contributed to 6 fatalities.
