"Near Miss" Incident Information File

A Minot, Maine teenager suffered a broken leg and cuts in an all-terrain vehicle accident in a gravel pit. The 18-year-old boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Greenville where he was treated for his injuries and then released. Driver inexperience and speed were factors in the accident, according to authorities. The victim and two friends had been driving around the pit on all-terrain vehicles when the youth was thrown off his rented vehicle and it ran over his legs. He was wearing a helmet at the time. The accident reportedly occurred when his vehicle hit the base of a gravel bank and it started to arc around the bank, throwing the teenager off balance.
