Stay Out Stay Alive Fatal Accident Summaries
for 2005

Despite the frantic efforts of two teens who dove under water in a fruitless attempt to find their friend, a 16-year-old boy drowned in a lake at Raccoon River Regional Park in West Des Moines, Iowa. The three teenage boys had been swimming together when the drowning victim suddenly ran into trouble and disappeared under the water's surface. The 232-acre Blue Heron Lake was converted from a sand and gravel pit about eight years ago. There are no lifeguards at the beach, which has signs posted warning swimmers of that and telling the public to swim at its own risk. (Source: Des Moines Register)
