A key member of the 'Diving a Dream' team drowned while scuba diving in an old pit mine in Crow Wing County near Crosby, Minn. According to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office, Jere Thorne, 47, had been scuba diving for about 10 to 15 minutes when his scuba diving equipment apparently malfunctioned. Thorne was considered a cutting-edge scuba diver known for using new technology to dive deeper and stay under water longer, his peers said.

Thorne's visit to the Crow Wing County mine pit Sunday was part of a "fun dive" organized by a Maple Grove dive center. Abandoned mines apparently are popular with divers because water is clear and often there are submerged trees to look at.

Authorities said Thorne died after being underwater for 10 to 15 minutes. (Source: Associated Press)
