Periodic checks need to be made to ensure that the intake airflow to the engine is passing unobstructed through the air cleaner and flame arrester. A plugged and sealed port is provided between the flame arrester and engine for the purpose of connecting a gauge to measure the vacuum of the engine intake air. When tested, the amount of vacuum on the Caterpillar 3306 engine should not exceed 30 inches of water. Equipment manufacturers publish the maximum amount of vacuum for the engine of each machine. The port shown is plugged and the plug sealed with a seal wire to prevent loosening. This is critical since loosening or loss of the plug would result in a large opening for the passage of flames produced by an ignition of methane inside the engine.
| NOTE: Some machines use an NPT (National Pipe Taper) pipe plug, which is self-locking when tight, instead of a seal wire.
