Periodic checks need to be made to ensure that the exhaust airflow from the engine is passing unobstructed through water in the scrubber. A plugged and sealed port is provided between the exhaust manifold and scrubber for the purpose of connecting a gauge to measure back pressure. The amount of back pressure for the Caterpillar 3306 engine must not exceed 34 inches of water. Equipment manufacturers publish the maximum amount of back pressure for the engine of each machine. The port shown is plugged and the plug sealed with a seal wire to prevent loosening. This is critical since loosening or loss of the plug would result in a large opening for the passage of flames produced by an ignition of methane inside the engine.
| NOTE: Some machines use an NPT pipe plug instead of a seal wire.
